Who or What Killed Jesus?
“All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith” (Romans 3:23–25).
When atheists and such tell me that they reject God because he is a cruel tyrant who killed and tortured his son, I am never sure whether to laugh to their face or not because I find it just to funny. That doesn't jive with the Bible, as Jesus made it clear and in his own words that no one took his life, but he laid it down willingly for us, to save our sad and sorry tukkus from eternal damnation. Also because he resurrected him to a glorified body and a status of king over all the earth, the heavens, to judge all things for all time.
On the surface, it seems that the Sanhedrin, along with some of the people and even the Romans, had Jesus eliminated. Yes, technically, they did, and also technically God did have the plan to redeem through his Word becoming flesh. However, what was the reason why the plan had to be made? It wasn't because God was bored and had nothing better to do with his time. He had an entire universe to run, so that wasn't the reason for the plan, so what was? Sin, all sin for all time of all people, including you and me.
All of us have sinned and were under penalty, rightly so, of eternal damnation, but by the gift of voluntary, this is key, redemption through the shed blood of Christ, we are saved from that. We have to accept him as Lord, Savior, the only Way, Truth and Life. Key here is that he voluntarily gave up his life to save us from what we justly deserve and because all mankind has a sin nature genetically in a sense, some to a greater degree and prone to different vices, we all deserve God's eternal wrath. However because the Creator loved us so much and so did his Word made flesh, Jesus, that Word made flesh gave his life to save us from that wrath. No greater love have a man than to lay down his life for another. Thus we all contributed, all of humanity and will continue to contribute to what killed Jesus Christ, Sin, our sin, all sin.
God loved us and his angels enough to give free will and choice, but with that has to come consequence. If he had been only about wrath, then he would have destroyed us and left us to hell eternal, but he didn't. He sent his Word in the flesh, then after the price was paid, sin, death and Satan were conquered he resurrected him, as he will all of us and we who accept him as the only way, truth and life, and allow ongoing sanctification by way of the Holy Spirit, will reign with him either in heaven or on earth. Salvation is a gift and we can accept it or reject it due to being rebellious children who want to live their way, live pleasure filled and immoral lives, do what we wish, not what is truly holy, just, and best for us and society in the long run. God didn't want robot angels or humans, but he was right to create consequences for choices, decisions and actions. If we choose actions that are along the lines of sin and Satan, then we have to bear the consequences. Even when we don't directly sin, the corruption of sin is in the world and will affect, touch all in some way, until Christ returns to set things right forever. No one knows the exact time and anyone who says they do is lying. There are certain signs, but the exact date we don't know of Christ's return and we shouldn't know because we should accept him out of love for what he has done for us and because we know sin causes nothing but chaos, degradation, destruction, and pain, not because we know he's coming tomorrow, or in a week.
When we seek to know who or what killed Jesus, we all did, all of humanity, all of our sins, past present and future, but if we repent of our sins, he will forgive and send the Holy Spirit to baptize us and take away desire for sin and the allure of sin. The sanctification process is ongoing and life long, so we will stumble and fall, but with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, once truly saved, we break the chains of the pattern of sin, of lawlessness, of abominations. That makes a world of difference in life and for all eternity.
Shalom and Amen.
