Oppression and Possession, Knowing the Difference
Matt 17:14-18, Luke 4:33-35, 8:27-33, Rom 8:9-11, 1, 1Cor 3:16, 6:19, 1 Peter 1:18-19, 2Cor 5:17, 1John 4:4, Deut 18:9-14, Lev 17:7, 2Chron 33:6, Lev Acts 16:16-18, Mark 5:1-20, 1John 4:13. These are some verses that discuss this topic.
One must not live in fear of possession or such, but one should know the difference.
A true Christian walking with the Holy Trinity, with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, will not open the doors that can lead to oppression or possession because they will be aware of what they are. This is also why we are told not to yoke ourselves with unbelievers, to have intimate relationships with them. That is not to say one should become a monk in a cave, as we do wish to witness to all, but we must be strong in our faith, nourish it every day and seek to stay clear of those things that might bring about emotions etc.. that could open a door for oppression, or possession.
Every morning, and every night, during the day, I thank God for whatever I have, including my life, being alive, in spite of the ongoing health issues with my fibromyalgia, and I study the Word of God daily, read my daily devotional. Where there is praise to God, Satan can not stand. That is not to say he doesn't try to attack, but he can't win the war.
There is a difference between the two and an important one to know. Possession is rare and is not possible for a true Christian in true relationship with the Trinity, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
Oppression is the influencing of Lucifer in our lives to make lousy and unbiblical decisions maybe over and over again. Oppression can lead to depression and anxiety attacks, all kinds of phobias, low self esteem, unforgiveness of self, even after we have been born again and accepted Christ, received the Holy Spirit. Oppression we will always have to be dealing with, as Lucifer will always try to sidetrack and bring us down, as will the natural corruption of others who are in the sin nature. That's just the nature of being in a fallen world, so we have to be strong. Oppression is not possession and it's important to know.
Possession is when a demon entity or entities are able to take possession of the person and have full control of them in every way, shape and form. That is rare and can not happen to a true Christian, unless they are perpetually living in sin or participate even in "fun" in anything occult, even listening, ongoing, to rock music and music that has an unGodly culture. Remember Paul said we battle Powers and Principalities, and there are spirits behind all music, entertainment, everything, either of God or not of God. I don't want anyone freaking out about music, but just be aware of lyrics and what you are listening to, the culture that surrounds that music, what it is advocating, romanticizing, like if it's romanticizing sin. Something to pay attention to. If a born again believer has the Holy Spirit in them, a strong relationship with Yahweh through Christ, and is not in a sin pattern, then they can not be possessed. Even with possession, one must not assume automatically possession and all medical evaluations must be done to rule out a medical cause, or one will cause greater damage. This is crucial, absolutely crucial.
How does one stand against oppression and possession? A solid relationship with the Trinity, prayer regularly, accurate knowledge of the Word of Yahweh, which of course leaves out Seeker Sensitive, Word of Faith, as well as other such junk and erroneous theology. Once one is solid in the Sola Scripura truth of Yahweh, in regular prayer, even just a minute of thanks and praise durning the day anytime during the day, and reading of scripture, asking for understanding, regularly, and seeking the Holy Spirit to connect us with Christ, to connect us with the Father, heart, spirit and soul, Satan will have a hard time winning any war against us. He may occasionally weaken us, but he wont win the final battle. We have the greatest Army on our side and the greatest General, never forget that. As for freeing other of oppression and possession, pray for them in earnest, sincerity, and Agape Love, but be sure your life is truly one of a born again, right doctrine, right living, not sin pattern Christian, for that is crucial.
Shalom and Amen
